Adventures in PEI

Only in PEI!!

When we moved we bought a lot of stuff (courtesy of Kath's parents) from this bird who is leaving to move to Australia, another 3 piece sofa suite, swing mirror and china cabinet.
We also bought her Queen size, only 5-6 years old really good condition bed. However as she wasn't leaving until... well.. still hasn't, she needed it.
Last night was the pick up night.

So I asked Christian if he'd mind lending a hand - he has a big Dodge Caravan and we could strap the box spring of the bed on the roof rack.
Well... we go... and... the box spring can't even get out of the house.

The guy from down under claimed that he took the bottom mesh off, pulled off a few staples and nails in order to loosen the slacks and bent it in - all by himself. Even chuckling in a proud manner of his grand feet.
However I believe this to be utter falsehood!

The nails and staples were untouched, no way he could have got them back in such perfect condition and even if he had it wouldn't have mattered. After 3 hours, the next door neighbour (who'd tried sawing off the nails in between the slacks with a power grinder of some sort and then resorted to prising up the slacks with a crowbar) left, his hands cut from all the staples - leaving a box spring with no wood edges, cracked slacks and blood all over the material.

FACT!, there was no way that the guy who was on the blower from down under got it up there by himself using this method even though he claimed so.
Even with the entire thing destroyed, the wooden slacks were STILL too long to get them past the stairway overhang without heaving, pushing squeezing and scraping paint off of her ceiling.
The bird said that once upon a time the banisters had been off and were all refurbished. This, most certinaly, had been the period when buddy had taken the thing upstairs. Oh and before you ask her upstairs windows were average at best - it didn't go in that way.

Of course I did not pay for this wreckage, however I paid her $50 for the mattress and she said we may as well take the debris with s and try rebuilding it.

So, I now have a task of rebuilding the box spring - it is possible, I'll need some new bits of wood and it'll be a mission, but anyone who comes to stay will now have a nice queen size bed, laying on a box spring that will have been lovingly crafted by yours truly.

You'd better bloody enjoy it!

Detox Update

So the story so far.

Day 1
Had some really tasty recipes. Didn't notice anything but ate normally as far as portions were concerned.

Day2
Really hungry, ate only detoxy type snacks, Rice cakes, nuts, fruit etc. and portions were pretty huge. Had some lovely Aubergine rolls.

Day 3
Eating a lot and snacking a lot. Caffeine headaches started in the evening. Running to the toilet a lot.

Day 4
Food was bland and tasteless. The main reason was that I was starting to eat left overs for lunch and Kath had bought (correctly so) ingredients that would not get wasted. This meant that by now although the meals were different it was still the same old flavours I'd been having for past couple of days - carrots, courgettes, tomatoes in one form or another.
Had a headache just above my eyes all day and my legs really ached when I woke up.
Bad wind, lots of toilet runs.

Day 5
Kath made Spicy rice which was awesome and I went and bought some more supplies, hummus and raisins. My legs started to ache really bad, really painful all day.
Not eating tons, just normal decent portions. Snacking on raisins, sunflower seeds and hummus.
Started to wake up much easier, eyes opened without stinging.

Day 6
Legs and back were really aching - lack of lactic acid? Not sure. Sean recommended I eat more bananas which I promptly did.
Like in a computer game when your character collects health and immediately benefits from it... it was like magic. Instant relief after a couple of bananas.
Ate the spicy rice and made a chick pea curry which was really lovely.

Day 7
Realised that the menu Kath created was really good and a good idea but a person needs a bit of variety and more than just the few same old nutrients, clearly I was missing things so needed to get more variety in this week.
Up with the larks, well Hayden, and pretty full of energy. Ate muesli for breakfast.

Day 8
Kath was making a roast, with roast pork and I was to just have the vegetables. I could really stand for that so had some pork. Not detox, but as I had been a full week I figured I could.
I decided to reintroduce salt back into my diet in general, for flavourings as everything in the past few days had really needed it.

Day 9
Up with ease, no aches or pains, back ache gone, legs fine. Got to work easily and way ahead of time. Had spicy rice for lunch but went home as Kath was ill. Took the afternoon off to try to give her some rest and help out - didn't do a good job.
Because Kath had not been able to go shopping I had to do it. It was late and I was really starving. I'd been relying on her to make the meals or at least have a focus on what to eat, but today was no good - I wanted healthy but was in that 'I need something fast and I'm ill prepared' mode. Normally this would result in a MacDonald's or something. I really didn't want to go that route, so I got a rotisserie chicken from the supermarket.
God it was tasty. My whole taste and smell for food is heightened.
Normally I could probably polish off a whole chicken, but I only ate the breast and leg and was quite full.

Day 10
Took the morning off of work to help Kath - again she'll probably tell you I didn't do a good job!, But it was still non-stop with the kids and I got some more shopping in. Detox was expensive when I last did it in the UK, and it;s not as expensive here, but we're still low on cash for this period and so couldn't' stock up on an entire week.
I bought Tabbouleh with cous cous and Falafel.
Huge Detox mistake!
Kath thought she'd seen cous cous in the recipes and it was OK. I read the packet and discovered it had wheat in it (but I didn't think that that was the cous cous, I thought it meant some other ingredient).
In the evening I had the most terrible cramps and wind EVER. I was doubled up in pain and farting for hours.
I read the book and the reintroduction of wheat in to your normal diet can cause bloating and wind. and cous cous was a wheat product.
Damn!.

It highlighted to me how bad wheat is, and that I often have stomach troubles could be related to wheat. So I'll have to be very wary of this in the future.

Day 11
Now.
Made a chick pea curry again last night which was really nice and just had it for lunch. I think pasta dish is on the menu tonight.

So 3 more days left.
I will have to reintroduce things carefully and slowly, after last nights wheat incident.
If anything I've learnt what I don't need and I no longer crave anything. My limbs are already benefiting, no clicking bones, no aches. My posture is much more improved, just standing I can stand with a straight back and it feels right. I've been able to sit on the floor and play with Hayden, jump p from the sofa to grab the remote.
Before everything was a chore and was difficult.
Even tying my boot laces might put me a bit out of breath if I was all padded up in winter garb. But now I can lean over and tie no problem.

what a state I was in!

I really hope I can continue with this healthy way, I'll be reintroducing fish and meat as soon as it's done, and I'll be drinking coffee again (I never drank much anyway) but I'm going to watch out for bread and wheat stuffs and all my meat I'll be careful to note how it's cooked, avoiding where possible the fried stuff, and including decent vegetables, like baked potato instead of fries etc.
I did weigh myself at the start of day 2, but I haven't since. I don't think I've lost a lot of weight and that wasn't the aim, but I'm sure I've benefited.

Check back in 3 days to find out :)

Walkabout Part 3

Yesterday was a rally nice sunny day, although it was -10C, we decided to go for a family stroll through the woods and down to the sea.
Mr Tumnus land is strangely serene.

In the distance you can see Ellen's Creek which is now finally frozen over.

The river is actually part of the sea if you take a look a a Charlotte town map
On our walk we found a small cliff top on which we could view down over the water.
Run!!
This guy was out eating on the cliff top over looking the icy river below. He was a red squirrel, of which is rare in the UK apparently as they've been eaten up by grey squirrels... or something.
I suggested that w come back to this picturesque bench with a thermos of Bovril :)
We're going to use this spot to take a picture each of the coming seasons.
Taz was on her Baby Bjorn, strapped to me so she kept nice and warm :)

Detox

Having worked so much since end of November, what with Xmas as well, and before crunch having Taryn and visitors, I've probably been eating to worst diet ever.
MacDonolds where possible, having no lunch ready so heading out to Brits or Piazza Joes. Xmas and New Year, of course, chocolates, desserts, cheeses - beer, wine.

It's been taking it's toll and the past week or so sitting for 12 hours a day in the same chair eating pizza for dinner has really begun to show, feel and affect me.

So, today I start 14 days of Carol Vorderman's Detox :)
I've done it before, a few years back for 28 days, so I'm sure that I can keep it up for 14 days. After which there's got to be a change in general. I'll not become some sort f health freak - that will never happen :) But regular exercise and healthy eating in general or for the most part.
I'm confident that I/we can do this, because it's not just some New Year fad - it's been in the running on on our minds for some months now, but we needed to really wait until the right time. Anything up until this week would have immediately failed due to the workload and being ill prepared.
But on Friday, Kath did a shop and laid out this week's meals for me. She's also partaking in the food, but using it as a healthy meal - so may add salt, cheese or other 'normal' stuff.
Breakfast then was a delicious Mango Smoothie, made with fresh mango's and Almond milk.

Lunch was a bowl of Rice pasta with various beans. Both were really tasty actually and filling. And these recipes we feel we can use in the future for a healthy meal, but maybe adding some grilled chicken or something.

For the next 14 days though, it's no meat. No milk, no dairy, no tea, coffee, no bread - nothing.
Pulses, grains, nuts, fruit, green tea, water and beans.
Sound like hell, but I know that the Thinking Man's Toty has made some really nice tasty meals out of all this and by the end of it, I know I'll be able to get out of bed without me neck clicking my bowls bubbling and my legs straining to stretch and my eyes stinging.
And all without any exercise.

I'm not going to blog the whole thing, I may report in about it - but we'll see in 14 days time what a difference it made.

Saturday 16 January 2010

Still...

I'm meeting up with Kath in a minute.

One of the guys who used to work here - Jax, a Gordie - is moving back to Vancouver. So we're all going to have a send off and some drinks.

I'm at work, at my desk now with a glass of Tequila that Jason's sister brought back from Mexico... there's a worm in the bottom and everything.

I shall be happy tonight :)

Melon...

Another Saturday goes by. Still crunching.

This crunch is real bad for such a piddly project - been in late since November 25th.

We have GM on Monday (Which is Gold Master) i.e. the gold master CD version of the game - finished.. shipped.

This is not going to happen. Despite having worked our asses off for a month and a half the upper end publishers (who we have to appease because it's their IP) give us feedback... TODAY, and want changes on a ton of stuff. The really annoying thing? Some of the stuff commented on is stuff that they've had and been seeing and playing with since November - some since July!!!
It's pathetic.

I really don't mind working late to fix a bug - a proper bug. I'll stay here until midnight every night for a week with no complaints if my code is causing a crash (or I should say our code - if it's something I can help debug). But adding features and overhauling stuff on a whim is just nasty.

I mean if they don't like the way the water sprays on the sheep then mull it over for a week and add it to the feedback. Log a request.
But that sheep has been getting wet that way since August, and they've had it in their hands and playable since then. In fact it's been the most talked about level because the others weren't done until early December.
And they log a bug about it today - and because it 'THEM' we HAVE to address it.
Now everything is possible, and I'll rewrite huge chunk of code to make a game more playable and better. But with GM on Monday it means that I can't fix it or rewrite those chunks of code over normal work ours - I'll have to strain to do it as quick as possible i.e. Tuesday which would mean another late on Monday. And of course the reason we're in again on Saturday.

Thankfully there is a bright side to my lack of family interaction and burn out. Due to the fact that it IS NOT my piece of code that's hanging things up - never was any of our code, just simply an unrealistic schedule and poor publisher feedback turnaround - we DO get paid overtime, as we're required in.

So that's something.

So... still no time for pictures of the house then LOL

Terry Plough

A few weeks back when it first snowed, me and Hayden built a snowman. This was him and the view from our front door.

As it drew closer to Christmas, the weather changed, it became warm and the snowman died. All that was left of him the day before Christmas eve was the small blob of white you see on the lawn.

We thought we would be guaranteed a white Christmas, and suddenly it was looking bleak. We heard tales from the UK about motorways being shut down and thick heavy snow at least an inch deep. I was gutted - first Christmas away in a country that one would think would be white in December and I was going to miss the first white Christmas in the UK in years!

Then, on Christmas eve we had a snow fall that lasted all day... what a difference a day makes!

I love the snow.
Except I don't like Mr Terry Plough :(

You see he drives along the main road every morning pushing the snow off to one side allowing the traffic to continue as normal (unlike in the UK :p)
But... he just leaves it piled up in front of your drive!

So every morning I have to go out and hack away at an ice wall that's about a foot high before I can drive my car out - it takes an easy 15 minutes, and whilst it's not great exercise I have to wrap up and by the time I'm finished, I'm swaeting and need another shower before I go to work.

I figured I'd keep it going, but it's really becoming a chore... fast.
Our driveway is long enough to fit 4 cars front to end and I have to clear it - if I don't it'll just build up and build up and soon become so solid that our car will just bank up and get stuck on it or rip something off of the bottom.

Look how deep it can get after a couple of days of snow!!

I'm seriously considering hiring Steve's Snow Removal to clear the driveway - they cost about $300!!! but they just constantly clear the driveway twice, thrice, forps! a day, whenever it falls for the whole season for that price. It's a bargain I tell you, digging and hacking at this stuff every morning is like pimping... it ain't easy!

Happy Holidays

Well...
Forgive me Father for I have sinned... it's been a month since my last blog.. proper.
Well I've been trying to catch up with family time and play games and relax, so the though of sifting through all of our pictures and blogging for an hour or so just didn't enter the equation over the past few weeks.
But tonight I've got a bit of time so here's how our holiday's went...

Christmas day was the best ever to be honest. It was just me, Kath, Hayden and Taryn, there was no rush, no need to get anything ready for family dinner, just our pace - dictated mostly by Hayden.
It took most of the morning for him to pen his absolute TON of present 80% of what you saw under the tree in my Xmas Eve post was his!

We played a lot, his favourite toy being a Lego Grievous figure and then we put a load of Lego Indiana Jones stuff together.
His main present from us was Lego Rock Band + Rock band 2 instruments... which is is still yet to really play - but more on that later :)
Taryn got the special edition Blu-Ray and DVD combo Snow White with a bunch of dwarfs which she seemed to like....

We had a Full English breakfast with proper bacon, black pudding and hash browns and a turkey dinner.
They don't do mince pies in Canada. But thankfully Kath was able to find the minced... stuff... that goes in them... in the meat section of the supermarket?!? and made some herself - they were lush!

Most of the day was spent playing with Hayden's toys, but I got Forza 3, and on Boxing Day Matt came round for some races, and we had Mel and Dave over for some drinks and bites.

Between Xmas and New Year..... well now this is normally the rubbish part of the holidays for us. You see if we spend xmas at home, in Harlow, then we have to travel to Plymouth or Norfolk for New Year. Or vice versa. Suffice it to say however that EVERY year involves travelling which pretty much takes up 2 days of the holiday, and then all the unpacking and stuff, and then straight back to work.
I hate it!.
I love seeing everybody, especially friends and cousins (well Kath's cousins normally) at New Year, but the whole travelling and wasted time really shortens what little holiday there is.
But this year with nobody to have to drive across the country to see, we were able to just play with our toys, watch our Xmas DVDs, and have friends over for coffee and games. It made the whole thing feel much longer and much more in the spirit of things. Plenty of left over food - which actually got eaten this year rather than binned because it's 5 days out of date.
And also we got to host the New Year party this year.
Taryn wore her best dress for the occasion.

New Years eve saw a huge falling of snow and so I was able to make a decent 'snow' bucket to keep the beers cold. As it was like -5, it was fine to keep the other beers outside - but not for long.
Normally if we host a party we can rely on our friends and family in the UK to turn up and we always have a house full and a good time... well until somebody has a fight that is.
And so this year we really weren't sure how well our party would go with just the friends we have made during the year, as nobody had really committed to come.
But to our surprise loads of people turned up and brought a ton of alcohol and nosh. And in true Canadian fashion some just turned up having seen Kath's offer up on Facebook.
Much partying was done.
Lego Rock Band being the favourite for the night.
At midnight we went outside for cigars, sparklers and a snowball fight. Hayden was still up and me and Sawler gored him into a big snow pile :)
After that, more games - Cranium, ensued. As everybody was way too mashed to understand or care how to play, this soon turned into drinking Cranium, whereby only drawing and play dough was used. Losers drank two fingers :)
The obligatory punch was made, and I found a noble substitute for Libby's Umbungo at the superstore. Asti Martini was found, along with every other ingredient ensuring that people would end up dying.
And they did...
I found these two at about 3am downstairs when I went looking for my Port - god only knows how gravity was holding Bob up!
And I found this other cheeky couple in MY bed!!!
Because of the lack of cabs the last of the hardcore (I have to say who were the English - yay) left at 4:30am. It was great, and the lack of any of my dumb ass nephews meant that there were no fights and no drama. It was a really nice night, full of fun and we were really chuffed to have such a good crowd here in PEI to celebrate the New Year with. Wish my boys could have been here also - hopefully next year eh guys?
